A few things we’re great at
Matson is working toward goals of achieving a 40% reduction in Scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) fleet emissions by 2030 and net zero GHG emissions by 2050. A big part of our strategy to reach these goals is investing in new ships designed for greater fuel efficiency and engines designed for new, cleaner alternative fuels. The company recently signed contracts committing $1 billion to construct three new Aloha Class containerships slated for delivery in 2026 and 2027.
This investment follows a nearly $1 billion Hawaii fleet renewal program that delivered new Aloha Class vessels Daniel K. Inouye and Kaimana Hila in 2018 and 2019, respectively, and Kanaloa Class combination container/roll-on, roll-off (“con-ro”) ships Lurline and Matsonia in 2019 and 2020.
At 3,220 and 3,500 TEUs, respectively, our Aloha Class and Kanaloa Class ships are Matson’s largest capacity and most fuel-efficient vessels. All are equipped with the latest in green technology, fuel-efficient hull design, environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks, freshwater ballast systems, and dual fuel engines designed to accommodate the use of new cleaner fuels.
